Reno Makes Best Towns List by Outside Magazine
Earlier this year, Outside Magazine released its 25 Best Towns of 2017 list. And guess who made the cut? We did! But that shouldn’t surprise anyone who actually lives here. We know Reno’s the best!
What is Outside Magazine?
Outside Magazine covers topics such as sports, travel, fitness, and health for the active-lifestyle crowd. For almost 40 years, they’ve been bringing award-winning content to print media, television and now social media and podcast audiences. More than eight million people view their content every single month. When they speak, people listen.
Why Reno Made the List
The magazine’s special advisory board took into consideration each city’s food offerings, bar scene, ethnic diversity and kid-friendly atmosphere. And, being an outdoor-focused magazine, Outside also looked at the recreational activities available to residents. Reno was named “Best Low-Key Hideout”. Local ski resorts like Mt Rose are less than half an hour away from downtown. And, we’re just a hop, skip and a jump from Tahoe’s famed resorts. And don’t get me started on the thousands of miles of hiking and biking trails in and around the city. In one day, you can have lunch, scale the tallest climbing wall in the world, go white-water rafting, hit the slots and have a nice dinner without ever leaving the city.
But that’s not all Reno has to offer. Thanks to its relatively low cost of living, several Silicon Valley companies have made Reno their home. Apple has a massive data center here, which they plan to expand soon. Google bought land at the Tahoe Reno Industrial Center. Zulilly, Amazon, eBay and Walmart have huge facilities located in the Reno area. And, of course, there’s the Tesla gigafactory located just outside Reno. A new high-tech company seems to announce their plans to come to Reno every other week. Nevada’s business-friendly environment and great tax incentives helped expand our city from just a place to gamble into something much bigger. And yet, we’ve still managed to maintain our small town atmosphere.
And Much, Much More
In addition, the University of Nevada, Reno infuses our local community with a rich diversity of cultures. Many tech companies recruit members for their team among UNR’s student body. Then, there’s the fact that we get to experience all four seasons. Unlike our neighbors to the south (Las Vegas), northern Nevada feels the full effects of winter, spring, summer, and fall. And, finally, you don’t have to look far to find some great food by our amazingly talented local chefs. Whether in the big casinos or the downtown area, fine chefs from all walks of life prepare mouth-watering dishes for patrons each and every day. Chances are good that, if you crave a specific cuisine, there’s a restaurant serving it. And you won’t be disappointed in the results.
We don’t need a magazine to tell us that Reno is a great town. We’ve known it for years. What part of the city do YOU think makes it so great? Let me know in the comments below.
